 I've read about archetypes in the collective consciousness - the shaman, the king, the warrior... I've even taken an independent study class at UT that tried to foster better leadership in me, through using these roles.

Over and over, we see minor variations on these archetypes presented as the protagonists of great stories. In turn, we sub-consciously try to mimic them, try to fit ourselves to those molds...
Heaven forbid, that someone should not measure up to the mold. They become considered unfit, crazy, lacking, passed over... because they are not playing or able to play to one of the types they should be, "as society dictates".
I guess it's like, "If you don't normalize, then don't try to socialize"...
