Why do many people prefer to focus on the negative or the differences they encounter?

    (...part of me thinks the underlying cause goes back to ego defense - focus on another's weakness, in order to cast one's self in a better light...)

    Also... I think judging is considered a higher-order thinking skill:
    After gathering evidence and experience, we still need to sort out the wheat from the chaffe. We need to determine 'what good to pursue and what bad to avoid'...
